Cajas National Park Trekking Day Trip from Guayaquil

Climb into one of the most singular landscapes in the Ecuadorian Andes. On this private full-day excursion, you will leave the warmth of the coast behind to enter Cajas National Park, a highland sanctuary suspended above 4,000 metres, where more than two hundred glacial lagoons mirror a sky that changes mood by the hour. You will walk among centuries-old Polylepis forests — the highest-growing tree on the planet, its russet bark peeling in papery layers shaped by the wind — and follow trails that wind through volcanic rock, cushions of páramo grass, and mist that arrives and withdraws like a tide. This is a landscape that belongs to condors, to high-altitude hummingbirds, and to those seeking the absolute silence of the sierra. As the day draws to a close, body light from the thin, pure air and mind unhurried, you will return to Guayaquil, leaving behind — for one day — the city to rediscover the true scale of the Andes.

Altitude and Silence: Páramo, Glacial Lagoons and Polylepis Forests

Book this tour and step down into the true scale of the Ecuadorian Andes. A highland escape from Guayaquil, designed for those seeking nature in its purest form and the quiet of the sierra.

📍 Your route into the páramo

1. Departure from Guayaquil to the Sierra

We collect you from your hotel in Guayaquil at dawn for a scenic ascent of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours along the road to Cuenca. Along the way, the landscape transforms with every kilometre: we leave the dry tropical forest behind, cross the cloud forest, and finally enter the páramo, the high-altitude ecosystem that crowns the Ecuadorian Andes. Your guide will introduce you to the geological and ecological story of this remarkable transition. 🚗⛰️

2. Arrival at Cajas National Park

We arrive at the Cajas Interpretation Centre, more than 3,800 metres above sea level, the starting point of our walk. Here you will be briefed on the day's route and the páramo's shifting weather, while taking in the first of the more than 270 glacial lagoons that give this protected territory its name. ⛺️🏔️

3. Trekking Among Lagoons and Polylepis Forests

We set out along trails that skirt Toreadora Lagoon and lead into a Polylepis forest — known locally as the paper tree, for the reddish bark that peels away in layers. It is the highest-growing forest in the world, a relict ecosystem of great scientific value. Along this moderately challenging route, we will observe the endemic vegetation of the páramo and, with some luck, the Ecuadorian hillstar hummingbird and, overhead, the Andean condor. 🥾🌲

4. Lunch with Andean Views

Once the trek concludes, we will enjoy a traditional highland Ecuadorian lunch at a spot with panoramic views over the mountains we have just walked. A moment to restore your energy, reflect on the trail behind you, and understand, up close, the relationship between Andean communities and this páramo territory. 🍽️🌄

5. Return to Guayaquil

We begin the descent back to Guayaquil, with one last look at the páramo fading into the horizon. You will arrive back at your hotel by the end of the day, having crossed, in a matter of hours, two entirely different worlds within Ecuador. 🚗🌇
