The Governor's Palace in Guayaquil is widely regarded as one of the city's most significant public buildings. Its architecture is unique.

Texto & Fotos: Trail Forth Journal.

A plan from 1770 shows that the Governor’s Office, the Customs Office and the Accountant’s Office were all located in the same building. The last wooden Governor’s Office building burnt down in 1971. This three-storey building housed various offices, including Political Headquarters and the Registrar’s Office. For this reason, it was considered the most important public building in the city.

The value of the Governor's Palace for Guayaquil.

The Palacio de la Gobernación del Guayas is one of the city’s most historically and culturally important buildings, as it houses the President of the Republic’s highest representative in the province. Although the building itself was only constructed in the last century, the governor’s office has been located here for many years, even before the city gained independence.

The German geologist, botanist and explorer Franz Theodor Wolf also visited these lands, and he is well known for his scientific contributions to Ecuador. In 1892, he described the Governor’s Palace as one of the city’s most impressive buildings.

The current Renaissance-style building was begun on 23 March 1923 and completed in August 1924. The German architect August Ridder designed a first sketch of the new building, which was later modified by the Italian engineer Mario Gherardi, a technician of the Sociedad General de Construcciones. Emilio Soro Lenti, Italian. He carried out the decoration of the building in 1923.

The building, which is located in the Plaza de la Administración — currently the city’s most important administrative area — was built at the same time as the Municipal Palace. While aesthetically different, volumetrically it is very similar. It is a single structure fragmented internally by large east-west and north-south running galleries. The Government of the Province of Guayas building was declared a cultural heritage site on 23 July 1982. Since 2014, it has housed the University of the Arts.
