cathedral by Pope Gregory XVI on 14 September 1838, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Guayaquil, San Pedro Ap\u00f3stol, was known as the Iglesia Matriz. Since then, it has been dedicated to the Apostle Santiago, the city&#8217;s patron saint. Several fires devastated the city at the end of the 17th century, one of which destroyed the wooden church in 1692.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-528c007 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"528c007\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The present cathedral, built in 1965, stands on the site of the first mother church. This area became part of the New City when this designation was given.
